• Nottingham H.O.U.S.E. - Ecobuild 2010

    Ecobuild 2010

Ecobuild is the world's biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment. The Nottingham H.O.U.S.E. team undertook a dedicated and concerted effort to get the house ready enough for its debut presentation at Ecobuild, far earlier than our final aim of the Solar Decathlon Europe competition.

At Ecobuild 2010, as part of the Nottingham H.O.U.S.E. team, I presented our energy efficient, zero carbon solar powered home as one of the key attractions of the event which surprised many in the industry with our PassivHaus and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 aspirations.

Solar Decathlon Europe - Madrid 2010

The Solar Decathlon Europe is an international competition for universities around the world with the aim of advancing knowledge on industrialised and sustainable homes, with a particular emphasis on high efficiency and energy self-sufficiency. In 2010 the competition (consisting of 10 eco-focused tasks) was held in Madrid and involved the assembly and exhibition of 20 houses designed and built by universities from the USA, Brazil, China, Mexico, Germany, UK, Finland, France and Spain.

In this competition I was a part of the University of Nottingham "Nottingham H.O.U.S.E." team (the only team qualified from the UK) and participated in the construction and presentation of the modular PassivHaus home in Nottingham, London and in Madrid for the competition. I additionally undertook management of the Nottingham H.O.U.S.E. website as webmaster.

We achieved 2nd Place in the UK Stage, second only to another team from our unit at University of Nottingham. The top three teams from each country were given the opportunity to present and compete at an international stage in Innsbruck, Austria in April 2010.
